The pond at the center of Duke Kunshan University is full of life. The most obvious life is, of course, the water lilies. They’re striking and beautiful and go perfectly with the modern white stone and pagoda that surround them.
If you look closer, you’ll see some fairly large fish swimming around among the thick water plants under the surface.
A family of tiny black ducks lives on the lake, too. The babies are still small and fuzzy, and when they get tired of swimming, they scurry across the lily pads. It’s adorable, but they’re always too far away for me to get a video.
This afternoon, I went for a little walk around campus and discovered some new-to-me vegetation in the form of these beautiful big pink flowers.
There were also these orange things that we had in California when I was a kid.
I don’t know why, but in new places, I always get nerdy about the plants. Which ones can I identify and which ones are new to me? Which ones are blooming here that wouldn’t be back home? It makes me happy to find a mix of the familiar and new in something as natural as plant life.
