I haven’t been very adventurous yet. In fact, I haven’t left campus. But it turns out you don’t have to leave campus to sample the Weird Foods of China.
This morning, I sampled a pumpkin cake.
This is a pumpkin cake, approximately palm-sized. I assume the Chinese symbol is accusing me of being a basic-ass bitch. It tasted little like an under-baked pumpkin pie without the pumpkin spice.
It took me a while to find Diet Coke here. Regular Coke is all around, in regular-sized cans. But Diet Coke is in tall, skinny cans. It also tastes a little different. Sweeter maybe?
After lunch, people started bringing out the snacks. First, I tried duck neck.
My colleagues gave me some tips: You have to pick it up with a glove because it’s covered in spicy stuff. There’s also a bone in the middle.
The verdict? I thought it was pretty darn good. You can tell it’s duck because it tastes like… duck. And it is indeed spicy. I was glad for the glove.
And, as a palate cleanser, these spicy pita chip thingies. (I’m actually not sure what they’re made of, but they crunch like a pita chip.)
The team tells me that next, I have to try chicken feet. I told them I’d totally do it. I feel as if I have created some sort of “will Sonja eat it” game, but they’ll soon find out that the answer is almost always yes.
For a parting gift, may I present the culinary artistry of the dining hall staff for the Halloween-themed lunch:
